The First YouTube Video Was Uploaded 10 Years Ago Today

On April 23, 2005, at 8:27 p.m., YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim uploaded the first YouTube video “Me at the zoo.” Shot by high school friend Yakov Lapitsky (who went on to become an engineering professor), it shows Karim talking about how cool elephants’ trunks are. The nearly 20-second clip has been viewed nearly 20 million times. Ten years later, YouTube is “the most valuable storytelling outlet our planet has ever seen” and its CEO Susan Wojcicki is “the visionary behind YouTube’s next evolution,” as Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer writes in this year’s TIME 100 issue, which recognizes Wojcicki as a “Titan” in the tech industry.

New "WhatsApp Web" Client Release Allows You to Chat From Your PC Browser

Facebook-owned WhatsApp is available across a variety of mobile operating systems but, until today, there still wasn’t an easy and unified way to experience it from the desktop. WhatsApp just solved part of that problem with a new client called “WhatsApp Web.” Interested WhatsApp users simply need to open Chrome and navigate to web.whatsapp.com to get started. On the site, you’ll see a QR code that you’ll scan using a BlackBerry, Android, Symbian or Windows Phone device. WhatsApp says that it doesn’t work for iOS users right now “due to Apple platform limitations.” So long as you’re connected to the Internet from your phone, however, you’ll be able to chat from the Web interface. Everything is saved directly on your phone; this is basically just a mirror representation of what’s happening on your device. Breaking the speed record: New invented Multi-core optical fiber cables transfers data 255 TBps

Researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Central Florida have developed a new fiber optics cable capable of transmitting the contents of over 5,000 DVDs in a single second – a speed six times greater than the previous record. The advance could help us reach petabit-per-second speeds over the next few years, which will be crucial for keeping up with growing bandwidth demands. By upgrading the equipment at both ends of the cable, IT experts have been able to improve the transmission speed of fiber optics by a factor of 10 every four years, keeping up with the increasing demands for internet traffic. However, over the next few years, this will no longer be enough. Fiber cables as they are currently being made face an inescapable speed limit  of about 100 terabits per second. If we want to avoid a "capacity crunch" by the end of the decade, we'll soon need to replace them with new types of cables that are able to push that limit much fu...
